Frequently Asked Questions
If an email is sent to me that has a virus, what happens?
If someone sends you an infected email, the email will be rejected by
our mail system. We will then notify you that an email was not delivered
to you due to a virus and inform you which virus it was.
If I try to send an email that has a virus, what will happen?
We only scan inbound emails. We strongly recommend you also instal local
antivirus software to protect against threats from floppy discs, CD Roms
web site downloads and other transportable media. Only 2% of viruses are
now distributed by these methods.
Why should I use your anti-virus program?
There are new viruses and new security threats that emerge every day,
some with the ability to spread accross the world in less than a few hours.
In these instances, time is very important. The quicker that you get alerted
about new viruses, the quicker you can protect your network against them.
Unlike other anti-virus solutions that check for new viruses each day
if configured correctly and retrieved by you, our anti-virus solution
checks for new viruses in real time! This ensures that you are protected
against new viruses as soon as they are identified
What is a virus?
A computer virus is a program that performs a malicious act, such as deleting
necessary files, duplicating files until your hard drive is full, etc.
How are viruses spread? That is, how do they replicate?
A virus spreads based on the technical features of the virus itself and
the behavior of the computer user. Most viruses are parasites, attaching
themselves to a carrier object such as a file or some other entity that
is likely to be transmitted to another computer. The virus attaches itself
to this object and waits until that object is used, such as when an infected
email is opened by the recipient. Once activated, the virus looks for
other suitable carrier objects and attaches itself to them.
Can’t the user tell that there is a virus in a transmitted file?
A virus does not appear as an object in itself. A virus always hides in
another application. An infected document will look normal and may even
perform normally. This means that it is hard for an ordinary user to tell
if a system is or is not infected. Special software is needed to examine
the system and detect a virus infection.
What is a worm?
A worm is very similar to a virus in that it is also replicating software.
The difference between a virus and a worm is that a worm replicates itself
independent of a carrier object. It does not need to attach itself to
a file or a document to spread or execute. In other words, if you have
a worm on a disk, as soon as you put the disk in your computer, the worm
begins. A virus would only start when you opened the infected file on
the disk.
